In our daily life we always create waste such as leftover meal, paper wrapper of our new furniture, the plastic drinks bottles after a big game… we collect them and try to reuse or recycle them, if we can’t think of any ideas, in the rest of their life they will be in the landfill, which is sad and hurting our planet. Nowadays, sustainable design and eco-friendliness is a hit, designers and different industries are trying to think of a new way to treat our planet better. It is amusing to know, people are upcycling sludge to energy in Hong Kong.
“T-Park is more than a sludge treatment plant. As one of the most technically advanced facilities of its kind in the world, it is an iconic landmark that demonstrates the benefits of green architecture and sustainable use of resources in Hong Kong. “
During the lesson of Design & Sustainability our teacher told us we need to think out of the box to generate some ideas and try to study any possibility, finally to undertake a practical plan. If a good design should be good-looking and practical, T- Park is a design like this, from the beginning they had a creative idea to upcycle sludge into energy, which is really ideal but not practical. Year after year, involving many help from different industry, they generated a practical plan and undertake it, and now they become an icon of sustainable design.

One of the upcycled project I really like is the chair in T-cafe. The Old Wan Chai Star Pier in Hong Kong was demolished in 2014, it did not entirely disappear, The Environmental Protection Department of Hong Kong salvage 100 wood fenders, with the intention of using them to create furniture for T-Cafe. The result is a collections of benches, chair and tables that fills the cafe's ample space.

To become an icon of sustainable design, from the beginning they already started- the architectural design. They used Eco materials such as Low emissivity glass to allow daylight from the outside to brighter interiors and using recycled constituents blocks. They try to promote an up cycling culture in Hong Kong and the world to work together, in order to put some effort towards a better future. Also, they gather different designers from Hong Kong to share their Upcycling ideas.
I am glad that Hong Kong has such a modern and technically- advanced facilities, to let people know about sustainable design is not only an idea, but also can be practical, is not about talent or chance but all about you are willing to think more.
