CREATIVE HOLDER - PROCESS

Before any design process I’ve did some research on style, exciting design, and elements. 

STYLE - VIABILITY & FLUID 

As I’ve mentioned before, rainy day could increase the negativity vibe around us.(see for more: The set) I need my design to have a statement to stand against: VIABILITY, defined as the ability to survive or live successfully which gives a strong statement to proof life and happiness. As rain is short of a liquid and I want it to be drained from the umbrella: Fluid, ability to flow easily would be a little wish to conceive.    

EXCITING DESIGN - THE MEMPHIS GROUP 

Instead of flowing the trendy style like Minimalism or Pop Art, I picked Memphis as the style approach for my holder design. Designer Ettore Sottsass founded the Memphis group, thinking around “radical, funny and outrageous” - disregarding what was considered in “good taste” eat that era. I’m amazed by all the shapes and colours appealed in their design, how can they think like that as a mature designer? I always ask myself. Their design are lively and valuable compare nowadays’s.

A table lamp created by Michele De Lucchi (an Architect). He created this piece for Memphis with a chair and coffee table. How interesting to see a spire shaped tube around another pole which have no function then aesthetic wise. The colour usage is considered, pink, green ,yellow ,and blue, mostly appear in children’s toys to hide the material’s character: steel, often considered strong, durable and machine made. I realised colour and material can really change the vibes of the product you wanted to deliver.

DESIGN PROCESS 

I’ve set three principles for the holder and package design. Portability, Dehumidification, and Security. The holder should be able to dry the umbrella. coming across with element, i picked pipe as the main part, since it is the component of many house for water shorting.

REFLECTION

I face lots of challenges during the model making since the school has closed. Nevertheless, I’ve they my best to manage the process, in order to meet the target. The design manning contain three parts: the lid, body, and tube. Materials are :Abs plastic on the lid and body as it is light in weight and waterproof for portability, silicone of tube for transformable in size, and diatomite earth for dehumidification. I might not be able to include security in this design, next time I’ll conceder more on safety. Thanks.
