ASAP- SHORT VIDEO

PRINCIPLES APPLIED: SHOT VARIATION, MANIPULATION OF DIEGETIC TIME AND SPACE, CUTTING TO SOUNDTRACK & CREATING PACE.

In this attempt, I applied the techniques of editing to narrate an event about the craving of the actor's for refreshment during his short break. Fast-paced music along with the constant change of scene delivered a sense of urgency and excitement.

SHOT VARIATION

Different types of Shots are used in many action movies when fast-paced scenes are being filmed.  In addition to numerous cuts in a short film time, different shots and dynamism can help speed up the scene as well. In order to have a better understanding, I play with different kinds of shots In the attempt video. As I've just said, the mood of this attempt is quick and excitement which will be the best materials to try out different kinds of shots. Here I extracted some of the shots I've used in this attempt:

00:00| ESTABLISHING SHOT (WIDW SHOT)

Establishing shots are shots in movies and television that are intended to set the background for the previous scene and inform the viewer of the action to take. Shows the relationship between people and things and determines the geographical location of the scene.

00:04| LONG SHOT

Used to show a new location. In this case, I placed it after a medium close-up of the actor's feet to reveal the total look of him, while the event keeps going - pacing down the stairs.

00:26| MEDIUM SHOT

Medium shots are widely used in dialogue scenes to let the audience follow the story, and often show as the upper body of the actors. Here while the actor is deciding what to buy in an urgent manner, it is better to let the audience come closer to feel what he feels.

01:20| CLOSEUP

The closeup is a powerful shot to use in films, it zooms to the subject and fills the screen with it. In this way, the facial expression of a person/actor will be seen clearly and suggest the mood and tones of the particular scene, which is joy in my attempt.

01:24| EXTREME CLOSE UP

Extreme close up is a closer version of close up, it shows more details or even texture of the object, it also can use to focus on a particular detail to emphasize without visual clutter caused by the surroundings. A bubble sizzling, icy-cold coke on the entire screen, who doesn't want that? During I took the shot, I swatch to maul focus rather than autofocus, while the transition of focus has given it a dreamy mood and the POV of the actor.

MANIPULATION OF DIEGETIC TIME AND SPACE

When shooting, editors can change the speed of time and can change the time of shooting scenes from hours to minutes.  Therefore, in a movie, when a character makes a long journey from one point to another, the editor can cut the character to a position to reach his or her destination, and the editor can manipulate time from then on. Editors can better understand the process of the character's experience by showing the character for a few minutes when the audience is watching the movie.  Editors can also extend the time, such as a scene where the character is in danger. The time is extended to allow the character to escape. This is to increase the tension. Control over time and space, because it takes time to explain the background story of the character to the audience.

The X-Men scene is an extreme example, in which the superhuman character has the ability to move quickly within a moment, in other words: he is very fast.. faster than a second. The scene was carefully designed and involved with lots of CGI (computer-generated imagery).

X-Men: Apocalypse

In my video, the actor goes went down from the 4th floor to the ground floor in only 24 seconds, which is impossible in real-time, again time has compressed through the manipulation of diegetic time and space.

CUTTING TO SOUNDTRACK & CREATING PACE

Cutting to soundtrack is an editing technique in which each cut or scene changes are inflected by the music, to synchronize what the audience see and hear. This gives a better sense of continuity of the video and the film will look more seamless. Before doing cuts on the footage I have in PremierePro for this attempt. I use the "mark" function to indicate the significant changes of beat and notes.

With the music settled, I can easily cut my footages according to those markers, the pace is created through the combination of images and sounds. I'll describe this attempt is to set a pace of quick and energetic, and I believe it is successfully attempted.
